I normally don't do this kind of thing, and in the future i probably won't as this blog isn't really created to promote other Youtuber's or gamer's in this manner, normally I just plug their names in and leave it at that, but i felt this video should be watched, for all those Metal Gear Solid fans out there, and those are into really good Youtuber's I believe you should head over to Jirard's Channel on youtube and watch his newest video. The man is one hell of a gamer, and did one hell of a review of Metal Gear Solid, link is provided below along with the video if you so desire to watch it here. Changing what made your game great to begin with.

Changing what made it great to begin with. Is it a bad ideal, a risky gamble, or a good move.

What kind of gamer suggest that removing successful parts of a game in exchange for new parts which "might" be successful, is a great business model, and good for gaming. Casual gamer's who have no idea how the gaming market works, that's who. Any real gamer knows that when you break way parts of a game that worked, in exchange for anything YOUR GOING TO PISS OFF YOU FAN BASE. NEWSFLASH, that's where your money comes from, you don't want to lose or alienate your fan base.  A youtuber by the name of fastpager200 stated

“but to me, breaking off elements of what made it successful and replacing them can turn out OK if it does it right. also, i am not talking about the first sequel i mean like very late in the series.“

I’m well aware that you shouldn't EVER take what a youtuber said seriously, but something about this particular comment got me thinking about what several game companies have decided to do. About how several of them have decided to change major elements of a game in hopes to reach out to a wider audience. Sadly the vast majority of them fall short. Why do they fall short you may ask? Well in my opinion it’s because they are changing major successful elements of their game to please people who never followed there game. They gamble with their fan base, innovating in areas that could alienate them, in hopes they gain new fans. Sadly it rarely ever pans out the way they hope. I mean I understand innovation, and I’m all for it, but not with a preexisting formula that has been known to work time and time again. I mean look at Square Inix, EA, and Ubisoft, each one had a great series, Final Fantasy for Square, Simcity for EA, and Assassins Creed for Ubisoft, and each one decided to try and change major elements to their preexisting formula, and were dealt a major blow in return from fans of the series.

Square Inix - Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy to me is the Call of Duty of Fantasy Action-Adventure/RPG’s. Like Call of Duty very few of the Final Fantasy series are actually sequels, only those like Final Fantasy X 2 and Final Fantasy XIII 2 and the yet to be released Lightning Returns are sequels to their respected titles. They are based off a Formula Square has used from the beginning, one that has been known to work time, and time again, and put numbers on the board. A formula that over time has been steadily growing, with Square taking out bad elements, in exchange for newer ones, in hopes they will serve to benefit the overall formula.  Over the years Final Fantasy has built up a fierce following, made up of gamers who tend to argue over just which Final Fantasy is better than the other. The biggest rivalry being “Cloud vs Squal” While Kelfka and Sephiroth remain the biggest antagonist in the series.

Recently Square released Final Fantasy 13, doing exactly what fastpager200 suggested. As a result many Final Fantasy fans hammered down on them hard, I personally didn’t even finish the game, I couldn't get into it like I did with the previous Final Fantasy’s. Why is that? Simple really, because they removed A LOT of what made the series great to me, there was no open world exploration, the Levels were closed off and linear, I couldn't back track in half the stages, and the combat was bad, half the time my party which were more then strong enough to kill a boss died because of stupid AI choices, where my medic would stand RIGHT in the mist of a.o.e attacks when he should have been out of range, resulting in him dying, and as a result my sentinel would soon die. While the story was similar to all the rest, that feel that I was playing a Final Fantasy game was replaced with frustration, and that general feeling that something was missing. In their recent attempt to fix this they released Final Fantasy XIII 2, An while they fixed a lot of the problems in the first, it still didn't feel like Final Fantasy, it was still missing major elements they cut out of it. Now they are making Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Returns… Only time can tell if it will be good, and only because of loyalty do I even consider buying this game.

Electronic Arts - SimCity

I think it’s a save bet to assume that like many of you out there, I have played EVERY Simcity since the beginning. An while SimCity has seen many changes, it stayed true to what it started, an still to this day I feel it’s the best in city building simulators out there. Thing is I hate AODRM, I hate that they took and limited my city size to encourage multiplayer, I hate that my enjoyment in the game is dependent on EA’s ability to keep the servers running, and I hate that at any moment a game I used to be able to enjoy can be taken down and I can’t play it. All the previous SimCity games allowed you to play whenever you wanted, however you wanted. There was no way that they could “close” the game down if it wasn’t profitable, if you had the game, you owned it for life, and it was yours, they had no control over what you did with that copy of the game.  Now they have taken so much away from you that it’s not even funny, a feature I’m particularly vexed about is the fact that my save files aren't my own, if i destroy my city in a freak accident i can't just boot up a previous save, an worse the multiple times I have logged out of the game only for it to tell me a the last moment that my save files FAILED TO SYNC I.E. MY GAME DID NOT SAVE. That means any and all work I did in my city, gone. I never had this issue before hand, and I don’t enjoy having it now. Simply put, they changed a lot of major elements, and the only people who are enjoying this game, NEVER PLAYED A SIMCITY GAME PRIOR TO THIS ONE.

Ubisoft – Assassins Creed

Recently I’ve come to find out, far more people then who I originally expected were dissatisfied with Assassins Creed 3. While Assassin’s Creed wasn't the best game around, it was one of the most innovative games of its time, and due to that innovation, it developed a fan base. Assassin’s Creed 2 followed a similar formula extending it, adding a fresh new feel, while downsizing to a smaller game in some aspects. Brotherhood, and Revelations both followed the same formula, and were great games in their own right. ASSASSINS CREED 3 HOWEVER FEEL SHORT, as they ham fist'd the Tree running, (although I still kinda enjoyed it when I got used to it, but it could have been much better, and used more often.) the characters were barely even likable  and hardly relatable, and the side quest were just not interesting. They decided to change major key elements, to take out major key elements that made Assassins creed so great, and the game suffered as a result of this choice.

What am I getting at you may ask? Simple, you never want to cut out major parts of the game that made it what it was. It’s a risky gamble and very few companies, a small fraction, manage to do it right. Lets look at Metal Gear Solid, then Look at Metal Gear Rising. While not exactly Metal Gear Solid, it still had that Metal Gear feel it, it still had the major and key elements that made a Metal Gear game what it was while providing something new and fresh to the scene. For another example of breaking off successful parts of a game in its main franchise and alienating fans, yet still being successful would be Saints Row. While I personally hate what the game has become, many others LOVE IT. Saints Row lost it’s story driven purpose, it’s character development, and any seriousness it once had, for a more over the top, insane, nonsense fun style of game play. YES I know THQ is no more, yet Saint’s Row will live on, as I do believe Koch Media bought the Volition and Metro, Volition of course being the studio behind Saints Row, for 28 million.

My point is that it’s a risky gamble, if you fail you lose majority of your fan base, and revenue that comes with them buying the game the love. That isn't something any game company should really be wanting to do, I can’t see any logic or reasoning behind cutting out successful elements to make room for content that players might not like, or do want. All you will do is leave them disappointed as they will wonder “where this piece of the game went”, or “why they cut this out, to add that.” As fastpager200 said if done correctly it could work, question is, who can do it correctly. An the sad answer to that is, not many, as many have tried and only few have successes in the endeavor. Anyway, I hope this gives you food for thought, and at the very least something to talk about with your friends, and as usual thank you for your time and your continued support, and I’ll see you guys next time.

Starbound Pre-Order and Beta Invites

Starbound

Pre-order and Beta Invites

That’s right folks, the long awaited Beta for Starbound is on its way. For all those like myself who were fans of Terraria, if you haven’t Taken a look at Starbound you should be ashamed of yourself. You should head over there NOW and redeem yourself before the game is actually out in full release Playstarbound.com GO NOW. For those of you who have, trust me when I say I understand your excitement. Having Pre-Ordered the game myself, I’ve decided to do this blog on the spot to encourage more of you to support their project.

What is Starbound

Starbound is a game (DUH) in development by Chucklefish, a Indie game company,  it is a 2D  side-scroller sandbox game, similar to,yet from the looks of it, far better than, Terraria. Those who followed and played Terraria remember back in March of 2012 when Terraria stopped updating. This came with as a major shock to those who played the game, as there was so many area’s where the game could have been improved, and we were looking forward to future development of this title. Shortly after reading the post about Terraria ending on Kotaku, while mindlessly drifting through the post over on Rock Paper Shootgun in April 2012 I learned of Starbound. Just like Terraria, Starbound has mining, it has Construction, a similar visual style, and yes a crossover in design, but there are several difference in Starbound, For one, rather than seeding various standalone worlds, Starbound takes place on several planets. It’s like Terraria… in space lol. There are a a lot more items with a wider variety in terms of creatures and landscapes. If you ask me Starbound is looking to be a great game. Below are some snapshots Character Creator, it's in it's beta stages. What this means is that their are possible changes that can and will be made to it before release. If you want to mess around with it yourself you will need to first make an account/ become a member of their forums, shoot on over to the page if via the link.

Why should I Pre-Order this game?

If you’re a fan of TGS and watch Totalbiscuit's podcast, or even watch Totalbiscuit I’m sure this is a question your asking yourself RIGHT NOW. Well one, depending on how much you pay when you pre-order depends on how much you get. The pre-orders can be seen on their page Playstarbound.com/store/  where the lowest payment to pre-order Starbound is 15   dollars. This gets you 1 copy of Starbound +   a steam key when it comes to Steam, a Beta Invite, and Starbound’s Sound track WHICH is available now, (the soundtrack that is, not the beta.)  The highest you can pre-order for is 2000, I personally did the 20 pre-order.  Did I forget to mention that both Totalbiscuit and Jesse Cox said they would to a let's play of Starbound on it’s release. If you watched their Terraria let's play, you know that they are bound to make you want to own this game at one point in time. Why not go ahead and pre-order it now, so you can play it, and be able to contribute, via giving advice to TB and Jesse during the let's play. not like they’ll listen,Still good fun and laughs are bound to be had. Besides that, they are adding content when they reach certain Stretch Goals. Right now they have added in Pets, Fossils, and my favorite a new race The Novakids.

Why are you still here?

Seriously go the the website and check out the game… I gave you links, what are you a stalker, what you want more? Anything else you need to know about Starbound can be found on their website, look here is another link Playstarbound.com, I'll be doing a more in depth review of this through out the beta and apon release. As always thank you for your continued support and i'll see you all next time.

So i've been hard at work, working on the format for the Video gaming news, trust me when i tell you it wasn't easy to find a way to go about doing this, as most everything has already been done, and there very few ways to go about giving news in the first place lol. None the less, with the help of Nevaeh Howard, and Skyler Thomas we have done it. Due to the nature of  this we will be working it into a newer Blog that will be connected to this blog, JUST NOT ON TUMBLR. I'll give  you more on the Tumblr situation, but lets just say your probably not going to like it. So over the next few days, we will create and design the new blog, which if you haven't guess will also be on blogger. On this new blog you will find All ORIGINAL CONTENT. Such as The story break down for Kingdom Hearts which will be coming in the near future, as well as the Evolution of Bioshock. There we will also be posting Game Reviews for the older games as well. Post to come

THINGS THE FUTURE HOLDS ON GAMING WITH DEE.

Ok, i know i'm running behind on posting. I had a few personal matters to attend to, and that coupled with the games i have been playing to review, and games i play to relax have bee cutting into my time. Now that the personal matter has been attended to, i can bring you the content that i promised.

Aside from Gaming with Dee's usual content, I'm going to start bringing you various gaming news. I know i keep saying this, but it is coming, it's just the format has taken a while to work on and get right. I have sorted through the messages sent to me, and have decided to play through and review Kingdom Hearts, and the ENTIRE Bioshock Series. The game review for Mega Man X is coming, I had to re install Microsoft Office, had a hard drive failure, lost lot of content, so it's coming bare with me. Due to recent messages I WILL NOT be removing Current game reviews, i will just review them much later to give a in depth break down of the game, and my enjoyment or dislike of it. If you don't care for that, there are other blogs out there for you, READ THEM, moving on. The game chosen to be reviewed after Mega Man X was The Shadow of the Colossus.

For those of you who care, there will be more content coming for youtube as well, just with that hard drive failure, i lost all of my recorded content. No worries, the vast majority of it can be re-recorded, it'll just take time. Aside form the FTL series (which won't last long, as i refuse to have a 50 part series on my channel), and Starcraft 2. I'm working to bring reviews to you as well, and as requested i'll be playing FF7 NOT 8. While i did enjoy 8, 7 was the first Final Fantasy i played and introduced me to the games series, and well i don't have 8 on pc. If my pc wills it, i would also like to show you some videos of Tera online, dungeons, BAM fights and so on, but my pc refuse's to get along with Tera when i try to record. If i can figure out whats wrong then i will bring you video's of that as well. I will also bring you my thoughts and views on some of the actions taken in the gaming industry. As well as commentated videos, since people have been asking for them.

So a brief break down of whats to come

For the Blog

  • Mega Man X review
  • Weekly gaming news (if there is anything interesting.)
  • Kingdom Hearts Story break down (in the near furture)
  • The evolution of Bioshock (in the near future)
  • Bioshock Infinite review (when i finish the game)
  • Shadow of the Colossus
This is is not to be taken in any particular order.

For Youtube

  1. Starcraft 2 story (Requested), and multiplayer (if and when i find time)
  2. FF7 (Requested)
  3. FTL second attempt
  4. TERA online (if my pc wills it.)
  5. Thoughts and views on gaming.
This list is numbered in order of importance.

THERE WILL BE NO MINECRAFT ON MY CHANNEL!

Please stop asking for video's of Minecraft they will NEVER happen. while i do enjoy playing minecraft i see no reason to put it on my channel, an i haven't played Minecraft in a few months, The server i play on did some remodeling and we decided to call it quits for now. sorry to dissappoint you, but there is seriously no reason to record anything, and put it on my channel. As always thank you for your continued support, and thank you for your time.

DRM and You

DRM and YOU, Understanding your relationship with DRM.

Hello, and welcome Ladies and Gentlemen. My name is Derron also known as the VeryOpinionatedGamer. What are we here for, AH that's right we are here to talk about DRM. Before we go any further i want to let this be known, I'm not supporting or defending any company that uses excessive amounts of DRM. What this video is here to do, is to explain what DRM is, what it was created for, and how it affects us as gamers eh. Now that, that is all cleared up and out the way, let’s move on shall we.

First thing i want to talk about.

WHAT DOES DRM STAND FOR, and WHAT IS DRM?

This is quite simple, you can Google it and find out. DRM is an Acronym for Digital Rights Management. That in its self should explain to you what DRM actually exist for. If it doesn’t let me break it down for you.  It exists for dual purposes; to drive up sells of their product, by preventing pirating. These purposes intertwine with each other, and no one purpose exist without the other. What it does however is completely different. Let’s back track a bit though before going on to how DRM actually affects gamers eh. Talk about what Business's view DRM as. To a business DRM is a broad term used to explain and describe the vast number of techniques or methods, they use for restricting the free use and transfer of digital content. In laymen’s term, it's the way business prevent file sharing on any level. Besides in games, DRM is and has been used in a number of media outlets for several years now, yet it's most commonly found in video games, movies, and music.

WHAT DOES DRM DO?

Here is the case built for the use of DRM. Without a strong system in place to ensure that only PAYING consumers can access media of any kind, piracy will grow out of control, unchecked, and will cut drastically into profits of the producers, and distributors. With this decline in sales, the creative content will drop, and as a result, the overall quality of the media PAYING customers view, and enjoy will drop as well.
Therein lies the fact that, DRM is there to protect profit, to increase profit, and prevent piracy. If you still doubt that, answer me this. Just what are movie, media, and game developers expecting people to do if they can't pirate eh? What are they thinking will happen if they can prevent access to their content to only those who pay? I'll tell you, they are hoping that these people who can't get this content will go out and pay for a legitimate copy. They are hoping that it will increase sells of the product, AND THAT is a fact.
That is the truth behind why DRM was created to begin with. HOWEVER in today’s society things don't always go over as planned... and in my opinion, DRM may not have serious and lasting side effects on movies, DvD sells on TV series, and music, it does however leave a major impact on gaming.
I think i spent enough time sounding like I’m all for DRM eh, now let me explain to you what is wrong with this system. See in the land where everything works ALL THE TIME, and nothing fails to do exactly what it was designed to do, DRM would be fine. People would stop pirating digital media, and they would go out and buy a legit copy, companies would generate more profit, and the quality of those products sold with DRM would be increased as a result of the increased in revenue. Thing is, we don't live in that world. We live in a world where things rarely work as they are intended, and have bloody horrible side effects on those things it's intended to protect. In the world we live DRM doesn't do what it's intended to do at all. It actually locks down rights to paying consumers that are perfectly legal, and drives up the desire to own a DRM free copy of the product, which drives the pirating scene. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not supporting pirates, but ignoring the fact that DRM increase the desire to pirate won’t help me prove my point.
It is a known fact that DRM has yet to actually prevent piracy. An what effect it has over sells is solely dependent on the consumer and how much they actually know about the games they are purchasing and the effects added DRM have on them. I'm not going into pirating games, that is not what this post exist for, nor this isn't about your opinion on on the matter, what I’m going to talk about is the affects of DRM on gamers and Video Games.

THE AFFECTS OF DRM ON VIDEO GAMES.

IF YOUR NOT PIRATING, and refuse to pirate. Things change for you as a direct result of DRM. See your experience in the game could be changed, and it's all thanks to the corporate heads who believe there is nothing wrong with the System of DRM. Your choice comes down to this, Are you going to buy the game or not. If your going to buy the game, the next section should be of interest to you, if you are not, feel free to stop reading and carry on with your daily life.

If you are legally purchasing a game, DRM affects you in a different way. The biggest of all ways is Persistent online authentication, or as we gamers call it, ALWAYS ONLINE DRM. Many AAA publishers use AODRM, companies such as EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Valve, and Atari. EA and Blizzard (owned by Activision) have been taking the hammer for this as of late with SimCity and Diablo 3 being tied to an online server. These games were previously playable without the need to be online, and now, not only do you have to have a internet connection, you also have to depend on these companies to keep their servers up and running,  Blizzard has had years and practice and still they failed, and EA…  I’m not going to talk about EA, by the time I do, it won’t be relevant, and I don’t like to waste time.

I know what you’re thinking, well what’s wrong with the game being online all the time. Well nothing if you don't mind the fact that it depends on you to have a reliable internet connection to play the game when previous versions did not, or being forced into a multiplayer environment when you never intended to play with others, or having to rely on companies who you wouldn’t trust to babysit your children, to keep their servers up and running. If something goes wrong server side, a game that you would regularly be able to enjoy is now completely unplayable. You will have to wait till they fix things on their end, which could take DAYS or even WEEKS, and I'm sorry that is unacceptable. On top of all that, the game will undergo MAJOR changes,  we will take SimCity. This game was changed drastically due to AODRM, your given a limit to your city size, there are glaring bugs, an the game is purposely created to be played with friends if you wanted to play by yourself, HA have fun trying to get that one city to do what four cities can do. I'm not going to sit here and list all the things wrong with this game,  you can Google “SimCity launch” and see from there the hell and chaos of this choice. I will list some major issues I had, such as your city saves not being yours anymore, server instabilities, places that lack internet connections or have unstable internet connections effect access to a game where I’d otherwise be able to play just fine. The need to have friends playing with me, or I would have to spend hours building one city to try to get it to do what 4 can, because when you leave a city IT STOPS SIMLUATING thus if I build a second city, my first city stops growing, stops producing money, time freezes in that city. Why would they do this, TO INCREASE SELLS, because all previous versions of SimCity could be pirated. So to prevent pirating, they are willing to fuck over everyone who has bought the game. Did i mention the city sizes are way too small, they force you to go from being able to build cities that go from one edge of the map to the other edge, to building cities within a small confined space. Why is this done, the answer is simple. They did it to force online multiplayer down your throat. These choices to connect single player games, that no one really ever played multiplayer was on, to a server was just plain greedy. If you can prove to me it was done for any other reason, i'd be happy to hear it.
Look at Diablo 3, in terms of game play, i really enjoyed that game. Not much in way replay value if you ask me, I’m not the kind of person who wants to play the same content only harder. I’d expect secret unlocks, new boss fights, stuff like that, but it was a fun game. Yet the fact that it's on a server has ruined that game, that and the AH… real money auction house could have been done much better than that. That was ham fisted and blizzard knows it. Aside from Diablo 3, StarCraft 2 was also connected to blizzards battle.net server, and while it hasn't suffered nearly as much from it, Blizzard went as far as to ban players who cheated on their single player. AS IF SINGLE PLAYER HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH MULTIPLAYER. Now the single player has built in cheats, due to the uproar that came about from this. Still players who never cheated in a multiplayer game, got their accounts banned, for doing something that most pc gamers do in the single player, and that affects on one but that particular gamer. AODRM effects your fundamental enjoyment of any game, they remove features tamper with software, add in features that are forced on you if you want to play this new game with this AODRM. Hell even Ubisoft has used AODRM, and in a much worse fashion then the others. Uplay is AODRM, and if you bought Assassin’s Creed II for the pc, and knew of DRM you know where I’m going with this. When you buy a pc game made by Ubisoft you have to connect via a Uplay account, when you do this, you can play the game. What’s going on under the hood is that the rest of the games content is being downloaded and installed to your pc as you play via a Ubisoft server.

The whole thing is access, not being able to access a game you would otherwise have access to. As gamers, being able to play the games we care about is a big thing. When that access is taken away, hampered or tampered with, we can't enjoy the games the way we used to, and want to. An publishers are expecting us to believe that they can get it right. Expecting us to put faith in them that they won't have any major foul ups, and that we will be able to enjoy the games we love MORE with AODRM, then the way they were. It's bullshit, look if Blizzard the company best known for getting it's gamers to believe or even accept it's bullshit, couldn't get them to accept Diablo 3, what in the hell makes you believe I’m going to accept what your trying to feed me. DRM in the right form is fine, Valve (steam) is full of DRM an while some of its games require you to be online, no all of them require this functionality. I understand the need to protect those who develop and produce quality video games. This however i don't understand, justify, or support. I think it's a safe bet to say that the quality of several great games would be affected by AODRM, and that they aren't as good as they could be, and had the games with AODRM been released without these features, they would be so much better.  I'm not the only one, several of us have come together to make our point. Yet companies are continuing to push their agenda, these choices are made on the corporate level, and they don't give two fucks about gamers. I once heard someone say, games are no longer being made for gamers; they are being made for money. Gamers need to make games for gamers, and that is the only way things will get back to the way they were. I mean DRM isn't going anywhere, It's been around far longer than people care to believe. Yet because Companies are making games for money, that the use of DRM is only bound to increase until gaming becomes intolerable. Thanks for your time and have a great rest of the day.
